Edward Scissorhands
The Dark Knight
Some people think that The Joker's make up in the dark knight is a pretty boring look but I think otherwise! There's a lot of detail gone into his scars and the make up itself is supposed to seem like he's done it himself messily but I think it's brilliant! They even yellowed his teeth for the role!
A Nightmare On Elm Street
One of horror's greatest boogeymen, Freddy Krueger gains a lot of impact from the awful facial disfigurement he incurred after being burnt alive. David B. Miller created this look by researching real life burn victims! In my opinion he is definitely one of the scariest characters in horror! This movie was in 1984 and I didn't realise how well done the special effects were a few decades ago!
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
An entire fantasy world of witches, munchkins and flying monkeys! Due to the sheer number of prosthetics used in the movie MGM actually had to set up an assembly line for applying all the make up and special effects to the actors and extras! I love the make up in this movie because there's so much of it. It's all incredible but Buddy Esben (the original tin man) took a really bad reaction the make up used on him! Poor guy!
The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (and the hobbit too!)
Last but not least, my favourite films of all time! While the most famous creation, Gollum was entirely computer generated, everyone else required extensive make up and prosthetics. From furry Hobbitses to the grotesque Urak-Hai it was all so well done. Fun fact - the hobbit feet had to be damaged when removed so new ones were made every time. There had to be around 1,800 feet made for just the four principal hobbits! Crazy huh?
